For Kayla O'Brien, who has turned herself from ugly duckling into the queen of fashion and beauty and one of the richest women in the nation, it's about a triumphant return with a little revenge thrown in for good measure. Hooking up with the man who got away, Jacob, is delicious icing on the cake.

For Jacob Lewis, bad boy star of the hottest auto racing circuit in the world, it's about winning a race he never had the chance to finish and proving he isn't just a pretty boy who drives fast.

But Kayla and Jacob don't count on an emotional curve neither one can overcome unless they're willing to forgive the past and race to the future.

excerpt

"So, what are you looking to do now, Jacob?" She pitched her voice low, low enough he bent closer to her to hear over the music blaring in the auditorium.

She could see the way his nostrils flared as if her scent was luring him. She smiled slowly and moved her hand until her fingers were just touching his. With her pinky, she traced over the nail and down to the knuckle of his index finger. It was wide and bumpy, as if it had been broken at some point. But the heat radiating from his skin was hot enough to scorch her. She thought about bringing his finger to her mouth and sucking it.

Before she could do it, he took her hand in his and pulled her to her feet.

"Let's dance," he said, not giving her the chance to say no. He led her just a few steps from their table and pulled her into his arms. The band was playing "Freebird," and he pulled her closer, so her hipbones were almost brushing his. She put her arms around his neck and his hands found their way to the tuck of her hips. The edges of the slit in the back of her dress dropped to within a centimeter just above her butt.

Jacob, with the luck or perhaps the skill of a man used to going fast in a car and with his women, found the opening immediately. It took every ounce of Kayla's willpower not to melt when she felt his warm, rough fingertips on skin she'd never thought of as an erogenous zone before. She kept her eyes on Jacob's and didn't miss the flare of desire in his when he touched her.

"Damn, woman," he murmured. "I can't tell you how good it feels to have you in my arms. I've been waiting for this moment my entire life."

He pulled her closer. She could feel the hardness of his body as she was pressed as close to him as possible without sharing body fluids. She'd never had this reaction from him, even when they had made love behind the football stadium that fateful night. She felt that bubbled thrill of sensing a victory close at hand, but managed not to chuckle aloud.

"It is a nice dress, isn't it?" she said, trying for coy. "My designers are the best in the business."

"The dress is fine, but not nearly as beautiful as the woman wearing it," he replied, then paused, keeping his eyes on her lips. It took all of her determination not to lick them. Or lick his. "And you know it."

She smiled and felt the triumph of her power flowing through her, mixing with the heated rush of desire. He was hers. All she had to do was say the time. Perhaps she'd let them both enjoy a little taste of desire before she enacted her revenge.

"So, Kayla," he said, interrupting her mental victory dance, "you want to ditch this party and go screw?"
